How Much Do We Truly Spend on Health Care?

Liz Peek, in a larger article about euthanasia under the public option, discusses the much-quoted number of 17% of our gross domestic product (GDP) which is spent on health care every year. Surprisingly, the number includes plastic surgery, braces, Viagra and more.

She also brings up the intriguing question of why Republicans have not suggested tort reform. We all know the Democrats are firmly beholden to the trial lawyers, which is why they won't discuss it. But why aren't the Republicans?
