Why Movie Sales Are Plummeting

Hollywood and the retailers often complain about how DVD sales are falling. They blame piracy, Netflix, RedBox, you name it.

I know from my experience, I use Netflix and the public library to watch a movie before deciding if I want to buy it.

I am sure many people are in a holding pattern now because of Blu-Ray (if you ask me, though, HD-DVD should have won that fight.) When prices come down on Blu-Ray players and movies, people might be more motivated to buy again.

But could it be that Hollywood has a hard time making a movie that's worth paying for? Now, I love me some movies. But it's so hard to find movies that are worth watching any more because of gratuitous sex, homosexuality, crude humor, Christian bashing, anti-capitalistic messages, and so forth. You know what I'm talking about.

I use the daylights out of Netflix. Thank God I'm not paying much per movie. Most of them aren't worth watching a second time. If it is, I buy it. I bought The Dark Knight because it was a good movie. I bought Transformers and Iron Man, too. I'm not going to bother buying Transformers 2 because the movie sucked. Star Trek was good but as someone who grew up on the old series, I didn't see it worth paying for.

Are you buying as many movies or going to see them in the theater? What do you think of the stuff coming out of Hollywood these days?

Polanski Sympathizers Against Middle America

You would think Roman Polanski just jaywalked to hear how Hollywood and others defend him:

  • Whoopi Goldberg says the director didn't really commit rape.

  • Debra Winger complains "the whole art world suffers" in such arrests.

  • "My personal thoughts are let the guy go," said Peg Yorkin, founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation. "It's bad a person was raped. But that was so many years ago. The guy has been through so much in his life. It's crazy to arrest him now. Let it go. The government could spend its money on other things."

  • More than 100 industry leaders and prominent authors -- including directors Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Michael Mann, Mike Nichols, Woody Allen and Neil Jordan -- have signed a petition asking that Polanski be released from Swiss custody.

  • In an opinion piece in London's the Independent, Weinstein Co. co-founder Harvey Weinstein, who is circulating the pro-Polanski petition, wrote: "Whatever you think about the so-called crime, Polanski has served his time. A deal was made with the judge, and the deal is not being honored. . . . This is the government of the United States not giving its word and recanting on a deal, and it is the government acting irresponsibly and criminally."

I would like to point out a couple of quotes:

"Hollywood has the best moral compass, because it has compassion," Weinstein said. "We were the people who did the fundraising telethon for the victims of 9/11. We were there for the victims of Katrina and any world catastrophe." So you can do whatever you want, including raping a 13-year-old girl, just as long as you help victims of catastrophes?

"My personal thoughts are let the guy go," said Peg Yorkin, founder of the Feminist Majority Foundation. "It's bad a person was raped. But that was so many years ago. The guy has been through so much in his life. It's crazy to arrest him now. Let it go. The government could spend its money on other things."

This is a feminist speaking. If there is any better condemnation of feminists as not really being interested in women, it's this. There is something else behind the feminist agenda. It is not about women.

Toys R Us Needs a New Spokesperson

Whoopi Goldberg is the spokesperson for Toys R Us. Now, I like Toys R Us but I don't care for Whoopi. But normally, who they choose for spokesperson is their business.

But not this time, not any more.

You may have heard this flap about Roman Polanski. The Hollywood types are talking about his "misdeed" and how he should be forgiven because he makes such good movies. Want to know what he did? Here's testimony from the girl he raped. Warning, it's graphic.

The quintessential Valley girl, Geimer artlessly tells of how Polanski approached her and her divorced mom about taking photos of Samantha for a fashion magazine. Impressed and reassured by his celebrity, the mom agreed. After a couple of outdoor shoots, Polanski and the girl ended up alone at Jack Nicholson's house. Says Polanski, "I could sense a certain erotic tension between the two of us." At the time, Polanski was a worldly 43. Geimer was a 13 year-old seventh grader.

At Nicholson's otherwise empty house, Polanski plied Geimer with champagne and had her take her blouse off for a shot in the Jacuzzi. He then gave her a Quaalude. "Why did you take it?" asked the prosecutor. "I think I must have been pretty drunk or else I wouldn't have," Geimer answered. Now "kind of dizzy," Geimer still managed to resist Polanski's increasing demands. "I want to go home," she told him repeatedly. He would have none of it. Finally, he cornered her on a couch, put his head in her lap, and started performing "cuddliness" on her, her word.

"I was going, ‘No come on, stop it,' but I was afraid," Geimer continued. Polanski then "placed his penis in [her] vagina," but upon learning that she was not on the pill, the gentlemanly artist lifted her legs up further, "went through the anus," and climaxed therein.

Whoopi says she doesn't know if it was really rape. So, Toys R Us, is this who you want representing you?

You can find the page with the girl's testimony here.

You can find the page to contact Toys R Us here. I suggest you use it to tell them what you think of their choice for spokesperson.
